Mariella is a photographer specialising in social documentary photography and corporate social responsibility.
She is the author of award winning book, My Piece of Sky: Stories of Child Sexual Abuse. The book, which presents over 600 pages, is a collection of photographs, interviews, artwork, journals and poetry about child sexual abuse: how it impacts the survivors and their families, the effect on child services professionals, police, prosecutors, and the community at large, and an insight into the perpetrators and their own personal history, among other stories.
Mariella is also the recipient of multiple grants and awards, and she is one of three photographers featured in “Beyond Assignment”, a documentary produced by The Knight Center for International Media and the University of Miami, USA, 2011.
She has given talks about her work on child sexual abuse, internationally, including TEDxJohannesburg - Decoding Greatness, 2018, The Neurosequential Model Symposium, Banff, Canada, 2018, and has been interviewed about this work by various TV programmes and news publications, including Christiane Amanpour, CNN, BBC, O Magazine among others.
Mariella has been a jury member on several photography awards, and festivals including World Press Photo Awards, The Netherlands, and The International Image Festival (FINI), organised by the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Mexico.
Her photography has been published in books, magazines and newspapers, internationally, and has been displayed in exhibitions and museums around the world. Her work on the Rwandan Genocide is on permanent display at the Memoria y Tolerancia Museum in Mexico City.
